First off, congratulations for making the move to begin an exercise program. Not enough can be said about the benefits of a fit and healthy lifestyle as we age. In our recent post, “The Benefits of Exercise for Seniors“, we discuss the many benefits and we probably failed to include many more.
Now, if you think a gym membership or expensive home equipment is required for a well-balanced workout, you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s actually easier to get started than you might have thought.
There are many advantages to a home workout routine:
- There’s no pressure. Let’s face it, going to a gym as a beginner has its challenges. Feeling like the new kid on the block is always somewhat stressful. Different gyms have different personalities. What if the one you chose isn’t a good fit? All this stress can be avoided by working out at home.
- You can work at your own pace and at a time of day that best suits your schedule.
- Inclement weather conditions are a big roadblock sometimes. Staying dry, warm and cozy in your own home while still getting your exercises in is a big plus to a home workout.
The biggest disadvantage to working out at home is, dedication is required. Many feel the financial commitment forces them to the gym. They feel obligated to capitalize on their investment and not waste it. Additionally, many enjoy the camaraderie a gym membership offers when they’re able to hook up with like-minded people. If you’re not really a social butterfly and have a strong desire and ongoing dedication to accomplish your fitness goals, then you may be more suited to a home workout routine.
